Beautiful Victorian shell art box - mirror on top and on the front of the dresser sides. Interesting orange litho look to mimic wood grain for the dresser. The lid opens to a blue inside. The shell on top ,the large shell, has a hole in it and I believe the broken piece of shell is under the big shell as you can hear it if you tilt the dresser. Good condition overall for the age with a few shells missing especially around the top edge of the mirror. The hinge still works on the box opening but is fragile with age. It measures about 5 3/4'' tall, 4 5/8'' wide, and 3 3/8'' thick. NOTE: the body's structure is made of cardboard. Dust trapped within the shells- some wear shown on mirrors, but mirrors are in good condition.
Sailors made these during their time at sea to give to their loved ones back home as a souvenir or sentimental gift. It was made using large numbers of small shells and was originally made sometime between 1830 and 1890.
The majority of the items in my shop are vintage or antique, e.g., have been used. Vintage and antique items by their very nature have some wear, imperfections, and signs of age/time. This is what gives them their character, charm, and collectability. Please examine the photos carefully for any flaws that I may have missed in my description.
